Tara,
Thanks for your kind post & good question. Here is an attempt at a breif answer.
Jesus taught us not self loathing, but proper self understanding. Buddha advocates an end to desire - if I understand him. Jesus says I can help you overcome certain wrong , harmful desires that are sadly present in each of us - desires towards selfishness and self idolization.
Our propensity towards self in exclusion to others or neglect of God is called sin. It carries a penalty of alienation from God - something we can do nothing about.
The good news is that Jesus, God's Son, Himself God in skin & bones, lived a sin free life. This qualified Him to take our deserved punishment for our sins. That is what the cross is all about - Jesus dying for us, in our place.
His resurrection - physically coming back to life - enables Him to offer us forgiveness & reconciliation. That is a gift - by grace!
So, thus my blog comments about "by grace or else." He is the source of good, good desires and the ability to resist bad desires. ANd in Him there is indeed self worth & hope!
Peace! KSD
